A Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft approached Pskov airfield after what appeared to be a routine mission. But according to the scenario presented in this video, Ukrainian drones were already waiting.
The Il-76 is one of Russia’s most important heavy transport aircraft, designed to move troops, military equipment, ammunition and other supplies across long distances.
That makes aircraft like the Il-76 especially valuable targets in a conflict increasingly shaped by logistics and long-range drone warfare.
In the reconstructed sequence shown in the video, the drones did not attack while the aircraft was still airborne. Instead, they waited until the transport had landed and reached the airfield, where its ability to escape was dramatically reduced.
The timing was critical.
Once a large transport aircraft is parked or moving slowly on the ground, it becomes far more vulnerable than when operating at altitude. A successful strike can damage not only the aircraft itself, but also disrupt airfield operations and force other valuable assets to be dispersed.
Then came the attack.
The drones moved toward the airfield and targeted the Il-76, turning what should have been a secure landing into a major threat to Russian military aviation.
The wider impact of such an operation goes beyond the loss or damage of a single aircraft. Long-range drone attacks can force airbases hundreds of kilometers from the front to strengthen defenses, relocate aircraft and change operating procedures.
Pskov is particularly significant because strikes there demonstrate how rear-area military infrastructure can no longer automatically be considered safe.
Modern warfare is increasingly defined by this imbalance: relatively inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten aircraft and infrastructure worth tens of millions of dollars.
For Russia, protecting aircraft like the Il-76 therefore becomes not only a question of air defense, but also one of logistics, dispersal and constant surveillance.
